Effective Date: November 2025
1. Overview
ChildSafe is a parental control system designed to help parents guide, monitor, and protect their children’s device use in a safe and private way. We collect only the minimum information required for the app to function — we do not sell, share, or use personal data for advertising or analytics.
2. What Information We Collect
- Parent account information: name and verified email address used for login and alerts.
- Child profile: first name or nickname only.
- Device data: device name, battery level, VPN connection status, and screen-time status.
- Location data: approximate and/or precise device location, collected only for parental visibility within the ChildSafe Parent app. Location data is never shared or used for advertising.
- Tamper alerts: events such as system time changes, VPN disconnection, or Safe Boot detection.
- No access to personal content: ChildSafe does not access or collect photos, messages, contacts, or any personal files from the device.
3. How Data Is Used
Data collected by ChildSafe is used only to:
- Provide parental control features such as screen time limits, app restrictions, and VPN enforcement.
- Display device health and status (e.g., battery, location, connection).
- Send alerts and reports to verified parents about rule activity or tampering.
- Maintain secure communication and synchronization between parent and child devices.
All communication between the ChildSafe apps and servers is encrypted over HTTPS, and all network traffic from the Child app is routed through a private, parent-controlled VPN connection. This VPN provides protection and filtering; it does not log, inspect, or sell browsing activity. No user information, browsing data, or personal content is ever shared with advertisers or third parties.
4. Data Storage, Retention and Deletion
All ChildSafe data is securely stored on servers located in the United Kingdom. We only keep information that is necessary for the app to function while an account is active.
No historical storage: The ChildSafe database stores the current/last-known state provided by each device (for example, latest battery level, VPN status, location, and rule status). We do not retain rolling history for these data points.
Tamper events: Tamper alerts are generated and delivered to the parent account. Unless required for immediate delivery or troubleshooting, they are not retained as long-term history.
Technical logs: Our infrastructure may produce limited, short-term technical logs (e.g., web server access logs) for security and reliability. These logs are not used to build user profiles and are automatically rotated and purged on a regular schedule.
When a parent deletes their account, all associated data — including child profiles, linked devices, usage information, rules and location data — is permanently erased immediately. We do not keep personal data after deletion, except if a minimal record must be retained to comply with applicable law or to ensure system security.
Data Retention Summary
| Data Type | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Parent account information | Authentication and communication with the parent | Kept only while the account is active; erased immediately on account deletion |
| Child profiles and linked devices | Associate device policies and monitoring with the parent account | Kept only while managed by the parent; erased immediately when removed or account is deleted |
| Device sync state (battery, VPN, location, screen time) | Display latest device state to the parent | Last-known state only; no rolling history is stored |
| Tamper alerts | Notify parent of attempts to disable protection or bypass rules | Kept only as needed for delivery/troubleshooting; otherwise not retained long-term |
| Technical/security logs | Maintain server integrity and diagnose service issues | Short-term, automatically rotated and purged; not linked to user profiles |
Our data-handling practices comply with the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the ICO Age-Appropriate Design Code.
5. Account and Data Deletion
Parents can permanently delete their ChildSafe account and all associated data directly within the ChildSafe Parent app. Deletion is immediate and irreversible, and removes all child profiles, linked devices, rules, and usage information associated with that account.
To delete your account:
- Open the ChildSafe Parent app.
- Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account.
- Confirm when prompted.
Once confirmed, your account and all related data are erased from our servers instantly. If you need help completing the process or encounter any issues, you may contact admin@childsafe.uk for assistance.
6. Permissions We Use
- VPN Service: Used to route all child device traffic through a parent-controlled secure network for filtering and protection. Traffic is not logged or shared.
- Device Admin / Device Owner: Required on child devices to enforce app blocking, screen time limits, and tamper protection.
- Network Access: Used solely for secure communication with ChildSafe servers.
- Storage (if applicable): Used only to save WireGuard configuration files when provisioning VPN access.
7. Children’s Privacy
ChildSafe is designed for parents and guardians to manage their children’s devices. The ChildSafe Child App is child-directed and does not allow children to create accounts or transmit identifiable personal data. We comply with the UK Age-Appropriate Design Code (AADC) and the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
8. Data Safety and Security
We use industry-standard encryption, secure authentication, and routine audits to ensure that your data remains protected. We do not use analytics, ads, or third-party SDKs that collect user information.
9. Prominent In-App Disclosure
When first launching the ChildSafe Child app, users are informed that the app collects limited device information and syncs it to their private ChildSafe account to enable parental control features. Consent is required before setup continues.
